Hector takes MVP award

Watched by his father Pastor Munroe Hector, and scores of excited school and other supporters, Donwell Hector, an 18-year-old right hand batsman, reveled in the sun and powered his team to the 2006 United Insurance Secondary Schools cricket title.

Hector’s 85 not out was the decisive factor in the final played at the Arnos Vale Playing field last Wednesday.{{more}}

Amidst pounding and other noises associated with construction activities, Hector unleashed his masterful innings.

His mother Gloria must have been spiritually cheering on her son, the last of 11 children born to the couple.

Donwell is the only cricketer in the family, and his father Munroe was as proud as the other MVA supporters.

Munroe described himself as a “festival” cricketer, who used to pace.

Donwell also featured on the awards list with the highest individual total 117 not out against St. Clair Dacon Secondary.

Donwell praised Under 15 Manager Samuel Holder and former Windwards batsman Bertram Stapleton as being influential in his life.

“I am happy that we won the tournament for the first time,” Donwell said.

He rated the 85 not out as “the best in the school competition.” The victory proved satisfying for him. He had vowed before the game to see his team through to victory.

Donwell has been playing cricket from age 10. He represented both Windwards and St. Vincent and the Grenadines at both Under 15 and 19 levels.

Another person on the prize list was Jrel Jacobs whose 250 for St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua was the most runs scored. Petit Bordel Secondary’s Ronique Laborde 18 wickets had the most scalps, but Calrick Ferdinand 6 for 0 had the best bowling figures playing for the Petit Bordel Multi-Purpose Centre. Seon Sween from St. Martin’s Secondary was the best Wicketkeeper.

United Insurance Representative Sharleen Greaves on hand for the presentation ceremony pledged her company’s support and sponsorship for the tournament.
