The meeting of Sports Ministers was held in the Sofitel Hotel in Melbourne on March 14th, and was chaired by the Hon. Rod Kemp, Minister for the Arts and Sports in Australia.

The First Commonwealth Sports Ministers meeting was held in Manchester in 2002. At their last meeting in Athens in 2004, the Ministers adopted a Plan of Action which focuses on 3 areas: anti-doping in sport, participation of women in sport and the organisation of major sporting events.

While in Australia, Minister Beache will also hold a meeting with Australia’s Sports Minister, and will discuss, among other matters, plans for the 2007 Cricket World Cup to be hosted in the West Indies and construction of this country’s National Stadium.

The Commonwealth Ministers of Sports Meeting coincides with the XVIII Commonwealth Games which will be held in Melbourne from 15 to 26 March 2006.
