TASVG Awards Top Athletes for 2005

The National Sports Council’s 2005 sports awards may be two months away, but Team Athletics SVG has ensured that its athletes are rewarded.

As a prelude to the national event, set for February next year, the local governing body gave recognition to its outstanding performers for this year at a ceremony last Saturday afternoon at the Players’ Pavilion of the Arnos Vale Playing Field. {{more}}Topping the list of awardees was middle distance athlete Kineke Alexander, named the most outstanding athlete. Alexander, currently pursuing studies at Iowa University in the United States of America, was also named the Under-20 female athlete of the year. Sharing the spotlight in that age group was the consistent male field athlete, Adonson Shallow. The burly Shallow continued to carve out a name for himself on the regional circuit during the year, copping several medals at junior competitions. This performance put him in third spot at the Central American and Caribbean level.

Ace distance runner, the indomitable Pamenos Ballantyne easily won the Over 20 male category, with the petite Kathleen James taking the female segment of that age group. Ballantyne collected the prize for the senior male athlete of the year taking the female segment of that age group. Ballantyne collected the prize for the senior male athlete of the year and James did likewise for the females.

The other age categories awarded were in the Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17.

Zak Peters and Tara Joseph took the male and female category respectively in the Under-9.

The spoils in the Under-11 were shared by Jarrel Mc Master in the male segment and Bithiah Dopwell in the female. Baldwyn De Bique was adjudged the top Under-13 male athlete, and Ashara Browne the top female.

The Under-15 boys title went to Courtney Williams, with Chrystal Neverson copping the award for the females.

The other divisional awards presented last Saturday were taken by World Youth championship representative Jadric Cummings and Shanique Smart. The secured the male and female prizes in the Under-17 category.

Anesha Anderson of the Barrouallie Secondary School laid hands on the inaugural Calvert Woods award of Most Promising athlete. The award was named for Woods, a stalwart sports administrator who passed away June 2,this year. Anderson’s reward came on the back of his performance at this year’s Inter -Schools’ Meet. Running as a junior, Anderson recorded the fastest time in the 100 M, bettering those in the Intermediate and Senior.

ACE Athletics Club earned the award of the Club of the Year, with the ever-present Rawlston Morgan rightfully taking the Coach of the Year trophy.

Contributors off the field came in for recognition. Woodrow ‘Keylee’ Williams walked away with the Technical Official accolade, and Volunteer of the Year was taken by Alana James.

A special award was presented to Donald ‘Ducks’ Llewelyn, for his unrelenting contribution to Track and Field Athletics over the years.

Last Saturday’s ceremony was two- fold, as it also saw the presentation of certificates to the seventeen successful local coaches of the recently conducted International Athletics Associations Federation (IAAF) Level One Coaching Course.
