Intermediate School on high

The Intermediate High School has re-affirmed that it possesses the best football talent in secondary schools here.

This confirmation came last week Thursday when the school retained the Coca-Cola Under-20 football title. IHS beat Barrouallie Secondary 2-0 in the final.{{more}}

The climax came at the Campden Park Playing Field, and followed the pattern of Intermediate’s domination throughout the competition.

The soggy conditions did not deter Intermediate’s midfield, marshaled by skipper Damal Francis and Seinard Bowens, who dictated the pace of the match. Nyanga Sam and Thaddeus Velox in the defence foiled what little Barrouallie forwards threw at them.

A Damal Francis free kick in the 36th minute found the head of an unmarked Romano Snagg, who drilled the ball in the back of the net.

Snagg, the competition’s leading goal scorer, pushed his tally to 21, to repeat last year’s feat. This time though, he went one better.

Bowens doubled the score-line with a low 30-yard shot in the 15th minute of the second half that left the Barrouallie goalkeeper diving in despair.

Bowens was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the final.

The Bethel High School blocked the Dr. J.P. Eustace Memorial 1-0 in the final of the inaugural Under-16 competition that same day.

National Under-16 player, Myron ‘Lef Eye’ Samuel booted home a left foot shot, after a deft shimmy on a defender. The decider came in the 49th minute of the match.

Samuel, who turns 13 next month, collected the Most Valuable Player award.

Kyle Greaves of Bishop’s College Kingstown with 14 goals was the top goal scorer.

Dr. J.P. Eustace Memorial placed third in the Under-20 and Barrouallie Secondary occupied a similar position in the Under-16.
