SVG up in tennis rankings

St.Vincent and the Grenadines has upped its rankings on the regional Junior tennis circuit.

This country placed fourth at the Caribbean Under-14 championship held in Trinidad and Tobago, November 5-11.

The three-member team of Shane Huggins, Michelle Gun-Munroe and Kohei Toshihara gave this country its best showing to date at that age level.{{more}}

Huggins placed fifth in the main draw, which put him through to the quarterfinal stage, where his stint ended.

Toshihara ended in position ninth, also in the main draw, while Gun-Munroe only managed a consolation play off. Manager/coach of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines team, Deron Grant, commended his charges for what he called ‘a good showing’.

Grant believed the performance by the young players made a statement to the larger territories.

He is of the view that this country is on the verge of breaking new ground in Junior tennis.

The championship, which saw eleven countries participating, was won by Barbados, with the host docking in second. The Netherland Antilles was third.

The recent outing by the Vincentians should serve them in good stead, as this country readies itself for the sub-region’s biggest Junior tennis championship next month.

The Milo OECS Under-14 championship comes off here December 12-17, at the National Tennis Center at Villa.

Fifteen countries are expected to compete in the championship, as this country continues to promote itself as one of the top venues for Junior tennis.

Blessed with the excellent facilities, arguably the best in the sub-region, St.Vincent and Grenadines has hosted other International Tennis Federation (ITF) championships as well as the Davis Cup play off.
