Back in Windwards Row

The Windward Islands captain is beaming as his side beat the Leewards to book their place in the semifinals of the KFC Cup One-Day Tournament.

The “cinderellas” of the regional game entered the match needing a win to advance. Had they lost Jamaica would have leaped over them. {{more}}

However, Lewis and his men took their destiny into their own hands and beat the Leewards by six wickets at the Cable & Wireless Ground last Sunday.

That’s half the reason why Lewis is smiling. The other reason is that he got his spinning fingers back in action and snatched three for 23 off 9.2 overs to put the Leewards in a tangle. The Leewards crashed for 144 off 38.2 overs and Windwards replied with 145 for four in 42.3 overs.

“We needed a win to get to the next round and I’m delighted we took care of business,” said the former West Indies player. “I am happy because we worked hard and now we have achieved half of our goal. The aim is to win the tournament.

My bowling was quite good today and I am looking forward to bigger things.”

Lewis’ spin turned back a blazing innings of 50 by Omari Banks. Entering at No.8 – four slots too low – the lion-hearted Banks hit five sixes off 41 balls before he was last out. While at the crease he made all but 12 of the runs scored.

Later he took two for 26 off ten overs.
