SVG women aiming for title in 2006

St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ senior women cricketers will be seeking to become the first team to win the regional title in 2006. That tournament will be under the unified set up of the West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Women’s Federation.

The 2005 version, which ended here last weekend, saw the surrendering of the League title by the host and Trinidad and Tobago doing the double.{{more}}

Local fans were doused with a double dose of disappointment as the home team squandered opportunities to procure regional cricket glory.

Returning as League champion, St. Vincent and the Grenadines were well positioned in last week Thursday’s final against Trinidad and Tobago to retain the title.

A late order collapse by the Trinidadians saw them posting 117 all out off 43.3 overs. Brenda Solozano Rodney 44 steadied things at the early part of the innings. She shared in a third wicket partnership of 67 with Erica George as the two pushed the score from 29 for 2, to 96 for 3, when Rodney was out. Then it was steady trek back to the Players’ Pavilion as Earlene Degrads spun her way to 4 for 26, and Clea Hoyte 3 for 21, to engineer the collapse.

Irresponsible batting and nervousness by the Vincentians left them scrambling.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines folded at 114 in the last over. Cordel Jack’s courageous effort ended, when she was last out, stumped for 46 with the fourth ball of the 50th over.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines had a chance to salvage some pride last Sunday.

In a match because of rain, the home team was dismissed for 90 in 41 overs. Anisa Mohammed 4 for 18, Envis Williams 2 for 11 and Jade Chadee 2 for 14, took advantage of some inept batting.

Again, Trinidad and Tobago showed more grit and determination and recovered from 41 for 6, to reach the target without further loss.

Stephanie Powers and Envis Williams calmly navigated the victory.

Powers in her last season made 21 and Williams 17.

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines team did not win any of the major titles, but also left the Arnos Vale Playing Field last Sunday with fewer friends.

Some members chose to leave the venue during the presentation ceremony, amidst pleas from the Master of Ceremony Stanley Hinds and president of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Women’s Cricket Association Cinda Bobb.
