SVG takes up Women’s tournament

After a period of uncertainty, the venue for the 2005 West Indies Women’s Cricket Federation (WIWCF) tournament has been determined. St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) will stage the championship.

Hurricanes Emily and Dennis caused damage to several proposed venues for the tournament slated for last month in Jamaica and the rescheduled series will be contested from August 19-29.

“I am extremely ecstatic, I am very grateful to St. Vincent for stepping up to host,” WIWCF President Carol Whilby-Maxwell said last Wednesday morning.

“With the unfortunate situation with Jamaica not being able to host it, St. Vincent has come on stream and I am extremely grateful to the president (Cinda Bobb) and the members of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association for deciding that they are going to host this tournament,” Whilby-Maxwell added.

It was difficult for Jamaica to reschedule the tournament because the UWI Mona Campus where the teams were to be accommodated would not have been available due to summer programmes.

Seven teams are scheduled to compete in the tournament, including hosts St. Vincent and the Grenadines, who are the defending League champions, and reigning knockout title-holders Trinidad and Tobago.

Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Grenada, and St Lucia are the other competing teams.

Matches are slated for the Arnos Vale and Stubbs grounds.
