McKinnon happy with London’s Olympic victory

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon on July 6, conveyed his congratulations to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his colleagues following the announcement that London had won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

“I am delighted at this announcement. This is fantastic news coming after Manchester successfully staged the 2002 Commonwealth Games. It’s no secret that I have been a strong supporter of London as the only Commonwealth city bidding for the Games.

“London is one of the most diverse cities in the world – a

microcosm of the Commonwealth and indeed, the entire planet – and I am convinced that London 2012 will be a most spectacular and

inspiring event.”
