Justin takes Junior Tennis tittle

Fourteen-year old Justin Gun-Munro, took center court, at the National Tennis Court last Saturday night, as the last serving was made of the Nesquik National Easter Junior Tennis Championship.

Munro left the venue with the prestigious Challenge Trophy for his sportsmanship and deportment on and off the court. {{more}}

A tennis player for the past seven years, Gun-Munro was also voted the Most Improved Male player. These though did not overshadow his winning of the Boys Under- 16 Singles title.

Also taking home silver ware was Lerissa Morris. The petite Morris triumphed in the Girls Under- 18 Singles, as well as the Mixed Doubles Under 18, when she partnered Kurtley Jack.

Jack teamed up with Under -18 Singles champion Fidel Providence to win the Boys Under -18 Doubles.

There were others who captured two or more titles. Danielle Cupid won the Girls Under-14 Singles, and with Michelle Gun-Munro, copped the Girls Under 14 Doubles.

Continuing her winning ways, Cupid along with Shane Huggins stashed away the Under -14 Mixed Doubles title. Huggins added this title, to his Boys Under- 14 Singles crown, and the Boys Under- 14 Doubles. Daryl Mac Leish was Huggins’ Doubles partner en route to the top.

Mac Leish was to do it on his own, winning the Boys Under -12 Singles.

Halima Michael, won both the Girls Under 10 and 12 Singles titles, with Zachary Williams left standing in the Boys Under -10 category.

The championship’s Most Improved Female player was Roxanne Russell.

Akeisha Lowe and Sharie Roberts secured the Girls Under -18 Doubles.

Johnathan Perry was adjudged the championship’s Most Promising player.

Before the distribution of these prizes, brief remarks came from the husband and wife combination of Grant and Kim Connell, and Director of Physical Education Lynette Glasgow.

Kim Connell, the sponsors’ representative, gave assurance that her company will again align itself with the championship. Connell, once a top junior tennis player, opined that the current standard of player is higher than when she pit her skills on the court.

Grant Connell, newly elected President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tennis Association, said his organisation will be pushing for the staging of regional and international junior tournaments, as he lauded the “magnificent” facilities at the National Tennis Court. He urged participants to use tennis and sports in general, as a vehicle for their personal development.

Connell listed examples of tennis players such as Justin John, and John Fredrick among others, who attained tennis scholarships which have assisted them in their career path.

Glasgow while commending the association for their efforts urged them to pay close attention to sponsorship in light of its dwindling availability.
