C & W praises West Indies squad

The Digicel West Indies Cricket squad has come in for praises from an unusual source.

Cable & Wireless the other half of a raging telecommunications battle has congratulated the West Indies Cricket team on their outstanding play against South Africa.{{more}}

“Their performance is all the more significant given the pressures the entire team has been under due to the team selection and contract issues,” said Senior Vice-President Corporate Marketing, Rachelle Franklin.

He looked forward to the Second test taking place in Trinidad this weekend and boasted that their action had resulted in the six other players being eligible for selection.

Cable & Wireless promised to continue its support of cricket in the West Indies and announced plans to focus on its activities as key regional sponsor of the ICC World Cup 2007 to ensure the event’s success as a major showcase for the people of the Caribbean.

As the saga over contracts is played out, developments roll over in rapid fashion. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle terminated their personal endorsement contracts with Cable & Wireless early enough to signal a return to normalcy.

The company said they were in support of a proposal by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for a further contractual review by Vincentian born Caricom Court of Justice Adrian Saunders.

The company however expressed confidence that on Justice Saunders’ ruling a solution could be reached that would allow the West Indies to field the best possible team. They also look forward to the solution that would reaffirm the rights of players to have personal endorsement contracts and provide for the protection of the investment of team and player sponsors.
