Three selected for CARIFTA Games

Three athletes will carry the banner of St. Vincent and the Grenadines at this year’s Junior Carifta Games slated for Tobago over this weekend.{{more}}

Adonson Shallow, Junior Ashton and Jadric Cummings were the three selectees named by Team Athletics/SVG for the meet.

The experienced Shallow will compete in the shot putt, discus and javelin events

The powerfully built athlete will be hoping to add his first Carifta medals to the others gained from regional meets.

Last year he bagged a Silver in the shot putt and a Bronze in the discus at Junior Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mexico.

The other Under-20 athlete selected is Junior Ashton. Fresh from the Southern Games in Trinidad and Tobago two weekends ago, and a Cross Country outing in Florida the previous weekend, Ashton, in his debut year at the regional meet, competes in the 5000 M.

A protégé of top long distance athlete Pamenos Ballantyne, Ashton warmed up last week for this overseas assignment with a scintillating run on the fifth leg of the Inter-schools road relay, to power the Multi-Purpose School, to the top spot.

He was also part of the Chatoyer team that triumphed in the National Heroes Day Road Relay.

The lone Under-17 competitor from the Home of the Blessed is Cummings, who will pit his skills in the 100M and 200M events.

Like Ashton, Cummings is a debutante at this level, but unlike the other two, has more years ahead at the Junior level.

But it was disappointment for the local parent body, as medal certainty Kineke Alexander will not have a chance to compete in the region in her last year at the Under 20 category.

Scheduling with meets in the USA has made it difficult for Alexander to leave her Iowa State University team at this time. Extensive wooing by the local body on her University officials was unsuccessful.

The trio was expected to leave on Wednesday, smack in the middle of this year’s Inter-school’s athletics meet.

All three were expected to participate in this country’s most prestigious junior athletics event for their respective educational institutions, before heading south.

Rawlson Morgan is the team’s manager/coach, while Woodrow “Keylee” Williams is on the Carifta Games’ technical staff .
