Sophia Young on Sports Illustrated Cover

Vincentian athlete Sophia Young has been included in a Sports Illustrated cover collage, which hit news stands March 18.

Young, recently named an All-American by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, is only the second Baylor athlete to appear on the SI cover donning a Baylor uniform. Baylor is the college where the Layou-born lass is pursuing a basketball scholarship. {{more}}

The only other time a Baylor athlete made the cover wearing a Baylor uniform was when Iowa State’s Marcus Fizer was scoring over Baylor freshman centre John Flippen. The March 21 cover features 16 former NCAA Tournament MVPs, a handful of the women’s stars and one player from each of the 65 men’s teams. Young’s picture appears just below the “s” in Illustrated

The US press has reported that Young’s team, called the Lady Bears has won the programme’s first conference championship and also claimed the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Young, who is a Junior forward was named the tournament’s MVP. She leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with 17.5 points and 9.3 rebounds a game.

Meanwhile another Vincentian basketball sensation, Sancho Lyttle has ended the basketball season as one of the United States’ leading rebounders with 12.1 rebounds per game.

Young and Lyttle are two of a growing number of netballers turned basketball players from this country who are in the Us on basketball scholarships and who have been excelling.
