New sports facility for Mt Grenan

The ground has been broken for the construction of a sporting facility at Mt. Grenan.

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves and Parliamentary Representative for South Central Windward Selmon Walters broke the ground for the construction of a playing field, located on land acquired by Government at a cost of about a million dollars. {{more}}

Speaking at the ground-breaking activity Walters said government fulfilled its promise to the people of Mt Grenan and purchased the land last year for the playing field.

Tourism and Culture Minister Rene Babtiste, who was also present at the function, has said that shops and other businessess in the Mt.Grenan area will benefit from the construction of the playing field.

She said that plans are in place to promote St.Vincent and the Grenandines as a sports tourism destination. She said that teams from England, Europe and the United States would want to train outside their countries where the air is fresh and would come to St.Vincent and the Grenadines.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves disclosed that the government has focused and extensive policies being implemented in the field of sports nationally and in the communities.

He said that government has earmarked $21million for the development of the Arnos Vale Sporting facility, which involves diverting the river to widen the area for the construction of more pavilions.

The Prime Minister said that $256,000 has been spent at the Victoria Park for lights to be put in. He said that government would also spend some 12 million US dollars for the construction of the National Stadium. Dr Gonsalves also disclosed that work has been done on a series of community playing fields and new ones have been constructed.

The new playing field at Mt Grenan will be developed on 8 acres of land, and will see the construction of pavilions, development of a pitch, change rooms and fencing.
