Survivors on winning streak

United Survivors put their name into real life action with two convincing victories last weekend to maintain their lead in the 2005 Cavalier’s National Women’s competition. United Survivors trounced Rangers by 181 runs at Grammar School last Sunday. Helped with 81 extras, United Survivors cruised to 221 all out in 39.5 overs. Beverly Glasgow 28 was the leading scorer. {{more}}Kessie Malcolm 4 for 35 was the chief wicket taker for Rangers. They folded for 40 in 12.1 overs, wrecked by Rosetta Williams 5 for 11 including the tournament’s second hattrick.

That outcome was a follow up to a nine-wicket triumph over North Leeward the previous day at Petit Bordel. Sherriann Abbott hit 25, which took Survivors to 78 for 1 in 16.3 overs. North Leeward squandered home turf, dismissed for 76 in 18 overs. Sandra Samuel 15, was the only person with double figures.

Survivors kept their distance from defending champion J.G. Tigress.

Police for the third time, stayed away from their scheduled game, this time to the J.G. Tigress encounter scheduled for the Grammar School.

Tigress took their anger out on North Leeward at Petit Bordel Sunday. Tigress amassed 217 in 36 overs. Jean Blucher 82 and Celena Fraser 62 featured in an opening partnership of 140. Marriet Granderson 4 for 40 was the best bowler for North Leeward.

Carla Jones 19 was the only batter to show resistance as North Leeward was shot out for 67 in 25 overs. Phernel Charles, ironically from the North Leeward village of Spring, 3 for 7, and Jennifer Charles 3 for 23 combined to rout the batting.

Garifuna Stars stayed on course for a top spot with a 59 run win over Total Eye Care Rose Bank at Buccament. Garifuna Stars recovered to 134 all out in 33.2 overs. A 47 run tenth wicket stand between Denise Francois 21 not out and Donna Baptiste 16 kept Garifuna Stars shining. Cordelia Williams 26 was the top scorer.

Total Eye Care Rose Bank responded with 75. Earlene DeGrads 22 showed signs of a return to national level.

DeGrads maintained her form the following day with an unbeaten 32. That innings guided Total Eye Care Rose Bank to their first tournament win of the season. They reached 93 for 5 off 25.3 overs. That was in reply to Despers’92 all out from 28.3 overs with Grace Woodley 21, being the top scorer. Veron Edwards 6 for 24 was the destroyer for the Despers innings.

Rangers secured an exciting 12 run win over Despers in their encounter at Union Saturday.

Rangers scored 145 all out from 26.5 overs, with Kessie Malcolm 27 leading the scoring.

Then Amanda Thorpe came into her own claiming the last three wickets in successive deliveries to wipe out Despers. There were 133 for 7 and on course for victory when Thorpe struck. She ended with figures of 7 for 23.

Mayfern Joseph had a good all-round performance with 3 for 15 when Rangers batted; she followed with 34 to be the top scorer.

This weekend sees the last League matches. Police have been withdrawn from the competition. The battle for League title will focus on the United Survivors/J.G. Tigress clash carded for Union at 12 noon Sunday. At Petit Bordel, it will be the North Leeward showdown between North Leeward and Total Eye Care Rose Bank.

Tomorrow’s card pits Despers and North Leeward at Petit Bordel while Rangers takes on Garifuna Stars at Union.

Interest in this weekend action will be high. The League winner gets a Bye into the semifinal round of the Knock Out version. The Knock Out final is set for the Grammar School Ground March 20 at 12 noon.
