Women’s Cricket gets sponsorship

The local Women’s Cricket Association has landed sponsorship for this year’s competition, from New York based Cavaliers Sports Club.

The Club has provided the Vincentian organisation with balls, trophies, gears and a bat, which will be raffled.{{more}}

This weekend’s fixtures see defending champion JG Tigress in action against Total Eye Care Rose Bank at Stubbs on Saturday, and against Rangers at Buccament on Sunday.

Saturday’s other matches see Despers against Garifuna Stars at North Union, Rangers versus North Leeward at Petit Bordel and United Survivors battling Police at Grammar School.

The weekend card completes with North Leeward and Garifuna Stars at Grammar School, Police and Despers in a showdown at Stubbs, and Total Eye Care with home support at their neighbouring village of Petit Bordel against United Survivors.

A Knock-Out version is also planned with the final for March 20.

JG Tigress, is endeavouring to defy the saying that, “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”.

Two convincing wins on the opening weekend of the Cavaliers National Women’s Cricket Competition underscored the team’s intent on retention of the title.

In the opening round February 5, at the North Union Playing Field, Tigress beat Garifuna Stars by 65 runs. Tigress totaled 192 for 7 in their allotment of 40 overs. Myska George hit 42, and Jean Blucher 30.The Stars failed to shine, falling at 127 all out.

West Indies selectee, Juliana Nero top-scored with 43.

Continuing the winning ways the following Sunday, Tigress trampled Despers by nine wickets, at Stubbs Playing Field.

Despers was dismissed for 70, to which Tigress replied with 71 for 1 in 15 overs.

Celena Fraser was unbeaten on 24.

Clea Hoyte, who bagged 3 for 15, when Despers first batted, set up Tigress’ victory.

Like Tigress, United Survivors recorded two victories on the weekend.

They made light work of Despers. Led by 2004 Sportswoman, Cordell Jack, Despers was shot out for 67. Jack took 3 for 6 with her off spin.

Jack, then showed why she was voted last year, as the Most Valuable Player at the West Indies Senior and Under-23 tournaments. The powerfully built all rounder teamed up with Samantha Lynch in reaching the winning target, in an unbroken opening stand.

Jack made 24 and Lynch 31.

Jack, who is set to travel to South Africa next month with the West Indies team to the Women’s World Cup, was in spanking form, the following day.

Her figures of 4 for 10, with Maria Abbott’s 2 for 20, undermined Garifuna’s response. Garifuna Stars fell for 67 in their quest to erase United Survivors’ 195 for 6, made in 40 overs.

That total was built around Lynch’s 87 and Beverly Glasgow 36. When Garifuna Stars batted, Nero hit 37.

Rangers blocked Total Eye Care Rose Bank by three wickets. Rose Bank scored 121 in 18 overs with Veron Edwards was her team’s best batter making 24.

Amanda Thorpe 4 for 35 was the destroyer of the innings. Valcina Diamond 3 for 31, bowling for Rangers assisted her.

Rangers reached 125 for 7 in 16.3 overs, with Avian Myers leading the way with 30.

Huglette Codougan was Rose Bank’s top wicket taker with 3 for 24.
