She qualified for the second round of the 2004 Athens Olympics in her special event the 100 Metre though injury prevented her from further action. But her international performance propelled her to the most prestigious decoration at last Saturday’s National Sports Council Awards ceremony.{{more}}

Mayers was ajudged this country’s 2004 Sports Personality.

This is the seventh year since the Sports Awards have been staged under the auspices of the National Sports Council.

Cricketer Alston Bobb took the title in1998. Ace regional distance runner Pamenos Ballantyne copped the award for 1999, 2000, and 2001. Since then, he had surprisingly been denied the opportunity to be considered, disregarded by the Athletic Association for nomination.

Windwards leg spinning all-rounder Orlanzo Jackson won the award for 2002 while the 2003 title went to US-based National Basketball Association Golden State Warriors player Adonal Foyle.

Mayers, based in the United States has been one of this country’s leading athletes over the past ten years. She was the nominee from Team Athletics SVG, the body in charge of track and field operations. Her international image went a long way in swinging the vote in her direction.

That kept up the trend established by last year’s panel of judges.
