Jack, Butler nab sports title

Cordell Jack seems to have a knack of taking sports awards. It was only last May that she was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) when this country won the Senior Women’s Cricket Federation title in Trinidad and Tobago.

At home in July, Jack repeated the MVP capture when the Under 23 competition was staged. Again, Jack’s performance guided her nation to take the championship. {{more}}

Now she has copped the Sportswoman of the Year title at the National Sports Council Awards last Saturday.

She beat out Team Athletics SVG’s nominee Natasha Mayers, and Rugby’s Alexia Glasgow, the other finalists for the title.

Jack’s rewards came as a consequence of consistent all-round displays by the strongly built right hand batter and off-spin bowler.

She will have an opportunity to display her wares on the international stage for the West Indies in the Women’s World Cup carded for March in South Africa.

The 2004 Sportswoman of the Year is a member of the United Survivors Club and has carved out an impressive record in her short career on the cricket field.



Deighton Butler came close to West Indies team selection squad for the triangular Series, which ended in Australia earlier this month. But there was no stopping last Saturday at the National Sports Awards when he took the Sportsman of the Year title.

He beat challengers from Vincy Heat’s midfielder Kendal Velox from the SVG Football Federation and the Rugby Union’s Hollis Greene.

Deighton Butler was viewed as a dark horse in the race for selection to the West Indies squad. A series of consistent performances had catapulted him into contention, and his omission turned out to be a disappointment for his avid supporters.

Butler has now taken on the mantle of the Windwards bowling attack. He had waited in the wings for a long time, having to peer into the shadows of former stalwarts like Caspar Davis, Ian Allen, Cameron Cuffy, Nixon McLean and McNiel Morgan, on the local front. On the Windwards team, the absense of Fernix Thomas put an extra strain on him.

Butler has also served on the English County scene.

Butler attained his highest level of recognition last year. His performances at the West Indies One Day tournament forced him into contention.

That achievement must have been an influential factor in his choice of Sportsman of the Year.

Butler is continuing his exploits and has returned home with a successful Windwards squad for their battle which heats up at the Arnos Vale Playing Field today Friday 14 against Barbados.
