Jamaica beats Windwards in Carib Beer Series

GROS ISLET, St Lucia CMC – Jamaica remained on top of the Carib Beer Cricket Series with an 83-run victory over the Windward Islands in their second round clash which ended at the Beausejour Cricket Ground on Monday.{{more}}

Needing 224 for victory, the Windwards were dismissed for 140 to propel the Jamaicans to a maximum 24 points after two successive outright victories in this year’s competition.

Having dismissed the Windwards Sunday for 157 in reply to their first innings 244, Jamaica crawled to 136 on the final day after resuming from 90 for six overnight. Dave Bernard, 33, and Carlton Baugh, 31, remained their leading scorers although Lorenzo Ingram’s 15 not out and Bevon Browne’s 13 proved useful.

Right arm off-spinner Shane Shillingford was the best bowler for the Windwards, bagging five for 44, accounting for Daren Powell caught by Darren Sammy for one, Bevan Browne who was caught by Liam Sebastien, and Jerome Taylor who was caught and bowled for seven.

He earlier accounted for Baugh and Bernard who were both bowled. The other wicket to fall yesterday morning was that of Nikita Miller who was caught by Sebastien at silly mid-off from the leg spin of Rawl Lewis.

Kenroy Peters finished with two for 15, Deighton Butler two for 21 and Rawl Lewis, one for 36.

Set 224 for victory, the Windwards, like they did in their first innings, lost wickets early with the left-handed Devon Smith playing a Darren Powell full toss onto his off-stump with just two runs on the board.

Debutant Marvin Noel followed up his first-innings duck with just three runs when he was beaten for pace and bowled by Jerome Taylor to leave the Windwards 15 for two.

Sergio Fedee, who batted solidly in the first innings, was next to go, caught by Kepple at slip off Powell to leave the Windwards reeling at 20 for three. A fourth-wicket partnership of 44, the biggest of the innings between Craig Emmanuel (27) and Junior Murray (63), held up the Jamaicans temporarily.

Emmanuel was first to go, driving Browne to Lambert at mid-on. Liam Sebastien, for the second time in the match, was leg before wicket to Miller, this time for seven and Darren Sammy was leg before to Taylor for eight, 18 runs later.

He was soon followed by captain Rawl Lewis, who was stumped by Baugh for four as he advanced to Miller. Murray was eventually eighth out, bowled by Browne for 63 that included four fours in 183 minutes and 125 balls.

The end was hurried as Deighton Butler was bowled by Browne with a delivery that kept low as the left hander played back and Peters offered a simple catch when on four, to forward short leg, as he lunged at Browne and was taken by substitute Keith Hibbert.

Shillingford was left not out nine. Browne, playing his debut match for Jamaica, finished with four for 47, Powell two for 10, Miller two for 29 and Taylor two for 33.
