Convents take netball honours

The Convent schools here have made it a clean sweep in the Secondary School’s Netball Tour-nament, which wrapped up last week Thursday.

In the finals played at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex, the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown edged out their opponents, Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia, to take the juniors title. {{more}} An earlier game had seen the Petit Bordel Secondary defeat the Bequia Secondary 19 – 14 to take the third spot in this tournament.

In the senior category, it was the St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua that took the top spot going unbeaten in the tournament and totally outclassing the Campden Park Secondary team in the finals also played on Thursday, 43 to 25.

The Secondary Schools’ Netball Tournament was this year contested in three zones, the Leeward, Windward and Kingstown/ Grenadines. This allowed for the first and second placed teams in each zone to qualify for the quarter finals from which the eventual finalists were selected.

The tournament saw a total of 16 schools competing in the senior division while 14 teams made up the juniors.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the juniors was awarded to Shanique Deshong of the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown while Leanna Lewis of the St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua was the MVP for the senior division.

Officials say there was a marked improvement in the standard of play exhibited this year, particularly in the junior categories.
