Softball final this Sunday

The crowning moment of the 2004 National Lotteries Top Belair Softball Cricket Competition is set for this Sunday afternoon at the Dauphine Playing Field when right-to-be-called league champions begin to unfold from 1.15 p.m.

VINLEC Shot Callers will meet either last year’s champions, CGM Novice, or 2002 winners Troublesome Eleven. {{more}}

Novice and Troublesome Eleven face each other in semifinal action from 1 p.m. tomorrow at the same venue. For the second week, their semi-final encounter was rained out. Novice will be determined to salvage some pride after surrendering their knock-out title last Tuesday, losing to CEM Five Roads in the semi-finals.

Five Roads chalked up 103 for 5 in their ten overs, led by 51 not out from Salvan Browne. Novice was then routed for 52.

Five Roads’ win set up a final with Troublesome Eleven, which was to have been played yesterday.

For first-time league finalists, Shot Callers, their final berth came via the ousting of Nice Radio Pine Hill Clinchers last weekend. Shot Callers reached 141 for 8 in their 30 overs, led by a top-score of 41 from Chris King. Dill Clarke, 4 for 18, and Nicholas Ottley, 2 for 24, shared the bowling spotlight for Chinchers, but Joel Patterson’s 3 for 8 and Sheldon Nanton’s 4 for 10 undermined Clinchers batting. They faltered for a paltry 32.

The Presentation Ceremony follows Sunday’s final.

Apart from the big prize of being crowned league champs, individual awards are up for the taking.

Among them are Most Runs, Most Wickets, Best All Rounder and the Most Promising Player awards.

Novice, Troublesome Eleven, Shot Callers and New Track Guys will receive prizes for topping their respective zones in the preliminary round of the league competition.
