Windwards, Jamaica square off in one-day tourney

The Windward Islands cricket XI plays their first match in the Regional One-Day tournament Saturday October 16. That will be against Jamaica at Bourda, while Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados will forget about their fishing dispute and concentrate on trying to advance to the semifinal. {{more}}

The following day, the Windwards clash with Guyana. That is expected to be a crucial encounter, as the defending champion Guyana, on home turf, will not be sparing quarters. The Windwards take on Barbados October 20, Leewards October 21, and Trinidad and Tobago October 23.

The top four teams advance to the semifinal carded for Barbados October 28 and 29. The winners play the final October 31 at Kensington Oval.

Windwards’ coach Ian Allen is optimistic of his team’s chances of taking this year’s title.

They benefited from a series of warm up matches against teams in Trinidad and Tobago en route to the South American continent.

Former Windwards and Combined Islands opening batsman Lockhart Sebastien is managing the squad.
