Come early September, basketball action will move into top gear.
That’s when the Vinlec National Basketball Championships will spread across the State of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Assistant Secretary of the Federation Karel Bramble expressed the view that the 26 teams, which took part in last year’s tournament, will be lined for this year’s showdown. {{more}}
Teams in the Premier Division will have their eyes on defending champion DAC Calliaqua United. Matches will also be in A Division and Under-16.
There are four Zones: Leeward, Windward, Bequia and Union Island One, and the winner from each will take part in the Champion of Champions showdown. Teams will battle for the All Star team trophy.
Matches will be played at the Petit Bordel Hard Court, New Montrose, Union, New Grounds, Clive Tannis Hard Court in Bequia and Ashton Hard Court.
A female basketball competition is on the cards for November.
A World Maxi Basketball Championship is scheduled for New Zealand January 22 to 30. Bramble hopes that a meeting of the association tomorrow will finalise plans for this country’s participation.
The handing over of that sponsorship cheque was witnessed by Daniela May, PRO of the National Basketball Federation, Sabrina Mitchell, general secretary, Wayne Williams coach, and Shirlan Barnwell of Vinlec.
