SVG 3rd in Windwards’ Secondary School Games
St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be looking to improve their position next year when they host the annual Windward Islands Secondary Schoolsâ Games.
The Vincentians placed third overall when the games ended last week Friday in Grenada.
But this yearâs final standing was an improvement on previous years.{{more}}
St. Vincent and the Grenadines occupied the cellar position from 2000 to 2003.
SVG topped the netball segment and won all their matches. They beat St. Lucia 50-43, crushed Dominica 79-42 and got past Grenada 54-41.
The football team beat Dominica 2-1, went under to St. Lucia by the same scoreline and blanked Grenada 2-0.
In track and field, SVG placed third with 119 points. This segment was won by the host with 197 points. St. Lucia, with 129 points, docked in second and Dominica fourth.
SVG was dismal in both volleyball and basketball. The volleyballers were humbled by St. Lucia, 3-0, and by Dominica, 3-1. Their best showing in this aspect was their 2-3 loss to Grenada. The basketballers fared likewise losing all three matches.
Rising field athlete, Adonson Shallow, showed his worth at the games. He broke the shot-put record that stood at 13.98 metres set by another Vincentian, Jason Austin in 2002.
Shallowâs record stands at 16.85 metres.
He started the second half of the year in triumph, following his good showing at Junior CAC, held in Mexico last month, when he gained a silver medal in the same event and a bronze medal in the discus.
Gailene Gordon was voted this countryâs Most Valuable Player (MVP) in netball. Sean Glynn received this award for football, Daryl Dougan -volleyball and Kimberley Goodluck -basketball.
The St. Vincent and the Grenadines contingent to the games consisted of 40 athletes and eight officials.
Alson Jack, senior education officer, headed the St. Vincent and the Grenadines team.
