Vincy girl off to Canada

A Stubbs girl has won a prestigious International Rugby Board (IRB) Scholarship to play ladies rugby in Canada.
Alexis Glasgow left here recently to take up her stint with the Ottawa- Irish Rugby Club.
Glasgow’s scholarship was arranged by Tom Jones, the regional IRB manager for the North America, West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA).{{more}}
After months of fund- raising by herself, ably supported by the Rugby Club, Karib Cable, Rona’s and Scotia Bank, in particular, Alex was finally able to leave the State on Thursday for Canada.
She was seen off at the airport by Rugby Club officials including Jackie DeFreitas and Kelly Glass, who personally had helped Alexis by organising a mini golf fund-raising tournament earlier this year. A big thank you also goes to Nathan Sayers of the Rugby Club and his girlfriend Alex for coordinating the trip and onward travel arrangements within Canada.
Glasgow first started playing rugby at the age of 14. She rarely misses a practice and was the most outstanding female player in 2002 and 2003 and has been nominated by the Rugby Club for Female Sports Player of the Year in the National Sports Council Award Scheme. She is also a qualified IRB Level One coach
The rugby lass is the baby in a family of five raised by her mother. She hopes to be an air traffic controller one day, and is interested in joining the British Army. As for now, she teaches English to Japanese volunteers in St. Vincent and is developing her skills in pottery. She will be staying in the nation’s capital Ottawa with a Canadian family from May 19 to September 7, and it is hoped that this will be the first of many cultural exchanges with her Canadian hosts.
