The local women will return basking in glory whatever happens with the Knock Out segment. Of course, the double will be a phenomenal accomplishment, with the squad having secured the League title with unassailable 16 points.
The Vincentians shared points with home team Trinidad and Tobago in their first game, abandoned owing to rain. Thereafter, the Vincentians played unbeaten with Barbados, Jamaica, Grenada, and Guyana suffering along the way.
The icing on the cake came when they whipped former six-time champion St. Lucia by six wickets in their final encounter.
St. Lucia made 148 off 48.1 overs, with Melissa Billingy with 3 for 17 being the best bowler.
Juliana Nero’s 63 not out, put paid to St. Lucia’s chances of a win. The Vincentians cruised to 149 for 4 in 48 overs of the allotted 50 overs after being 50 for 1 in 25 overs.
Coach Roxelle John attributed the triumph to hard work and teamwork. He cited the high spirit of the party and their preparations as factors contributing to the success.
The victory is tremendous and historic, and a huge leap from fourth last year. It speaks volumes of the strides that have been made in recent years.
Education, Youth and Sports Minister Mike Browne who was on hand to bid goodluck and goodbye to the ladies before they left the country, commended the ladies on their scintillating performance.
The team was supported by the National Lotteries Authority with an injection of $18,000 for participation.
