Williams watched Flour Mills evolve over the years

Cedric Williams has seen the East Caribbean Flour Mills evolve into the Eastern Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC).

He has also seen a system where hand pushed trolleys, used to transport flour, moved to a fork-lift based operation that has made the work 100 times easier.

Williams will celebrate his 40th year at ECGC on January 12, 2018 and he is thankful to have a job that he loves.

Williams, a packer operator, said he started working with the company a month after it opened in 1977 and he remembers having to push trolleys and stack flour manually.

“We used to stack the flour in the warehouse. We used to use trolleys to transport the flour, but now we have fork-lifts, things got easier. We used to load ships in the past manually; it was hard, but now it’s easier,” Williams commented during an interview.

Williams remembers packaging up to 2,000 bags of flour daily in the early days. He said nowadays, he packages around 1,500 bags, but that can still reach up to 2,000 on a day if overtime is involved.

“I really enjoy my work at the flour mill and there are a lot of benefits; you get pension and what’s not. I thank God for that privilege, because not everyone has that privilege of a good job,” said Williams.

The dedicated worker, who hails from Lowmans Hill, said that over the years, he has watched the ECGC compound change and that is something he is glad to have witnessed, as he had worked on the facility when it was just being established.

“I enjoy this job a lot,” said Williams, who works along with six other persons.
