Arnhim Eustace: Our relationship is special, indeed

Statement issued by the Honourable Arnhim Eustace, President of New Democratic Party and Leader of the Opposition on the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

In the field of International relations, it is often said that relations between countries can best be characterized as one in which there are “no permanent friends just permanent interests”. And as we observe the changes in relationships all over the world there is much truth in that statement.{{more}}

In a few days time, indeed, on August 15th, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and St. Vincent and the Grenadines will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between our two countries. During these 25 years we have seen a deepening of the relationship under three different administrations in St. Vincent and the Grenadines – the St. Vincent Labour Party in the period 1981, 1984, the New Democratic Party 1984 – 2001, and the Unity Labour Party administration 2001 – present.

Our relationship over the years has not been rudimentary but rather the roots of our relationship go very deep in the hearts of our two peoples. A Taiwan/St. Vincent relationship is at the present time the most visible international relationship in the minds of thousands of people here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and it continues to grow. There is a deep mutual respect based not simply on our own interest and the interests of the Republic of China (Taiwan) but a joint concern for the future of our respective peoples whether at the political, economic or social level. As we have often said we believe that our relationship transcends the mere diplomatic and has entered the realm of the personal.

Our relationship is, therefore, very special, indeed.

We in the New Democratic Party, are proud of and cherish our relationship with the Republic of China (Taiwan). Long live the friendship between our two peoples as we jointly celebrate this 25th anniversary.
