Walters launched at massive rally

If all went according to plan, the Unity Labour Party (ULP) was to have staged the “mother of all rallies” yesterday, Independence Day in Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves’ hometown of Colonarie.

For a number of reasons and from all predictions the rally could have indeed easily earned the title the “mother of all rallies” of the 2005-2006 General Elections campaign.

Prime Minister Dr. Gonsalves is expected to draw a larger following than his fellow candidate Selman Walters of South Central Windward whose launching on Sunday night attracted a turnout the police estimated at 20, 000.{{more}}

Additionally, with the Prime Minister expected to announce the date for the General Elections at any moment the crowds at the ULP campaigns are swelling. And thirdly, with an all-day fete which was expected to run into this morning featuring the likes of Sherwin Winchester and the band Traffic out of Trinidad and Tobago, Shadow, DJ Twenty, Sexy Sugarz, 2 Kool Chris, Exclusive Sounds nothing can be ruled out.

Walters in his address spoke of his contribution to the enhancement of education facilities in his constituency. He mentioned development at the North Union Secondary School, which has made it one of the largest secondary schools in the country. He also addressed the issue of refurbishment of the Diamond school.

Walters who has emerged as one of the most charismatic speakers of the ULP promised to construct a heritage site in his constituency. He also spoke about the benefits that will come to the people of South Central Windward when the water programme is completed. Walters also highlighted other matters relating to health.

“I promised you good representation and I think I have done that,” said Walters of his tenure.

Prime Minister Dr. Gonsalves on the other hand spoke about the Education Revolution, poverty reduction, Cross-Country Road, the improvement of telecommunication, the Vision Now programme, the proposed international airport, the bridge across the Dry River.

“The NDP insults you, they insult you for coming out in your numbers… They believe you come here for entertainment, you come for the message because you are the warriors of the Unity Labour Party and you are concerned about the future of St.Vincent and the Grenadines,” said Dr. Gonsalves.
