Straker ready to take seat again

He has been Central Leeward’s representative since February 21, 1994 when he defeated the New Democratic Party’s incumbent, Herbie Young. Then, he was one of three opposition parliamentarians along with Sir Vincent Beache and Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.

Straker retained the Central Leeward seat in June 15, 1998, increasing his margin of victory over the NDP’s Norrell Hull. On March 28 2001, Straker increased the margin even further.{{more}}

He is Deputy Leader of the Unity Labour Party, and also Deputy Prime Minister. On that party’s assumption to office, Straker became Foreign Affairs, Commerce and Trade Minister. Earlier this year, he was assigned the Transport, Works and Housing Ministry.

Louis Straker cuts a neat figure. Always dapper in attire, he makes up for his height with his gift of the gab. One committed to the constituents of Central Leeward, and to the nation as a whole, Straker keeps his word. A devout Seventh Day Adventist, he maintains his philosophy.

Last Sunday was a remarkable day for him. The ULP staged another day rally at the Playing Field in Barrouallie.

He used the opportunity to outline his plans for the future. One of his promises is a secondary school listed for Peters Hope.

Barrouallie was awash in red, the colour of the ULP, and the effigies, signs, banners, and overall display welcomed Straker with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Crowds of ULP supporters thronged from both entry points of the Town, from the southern end over the Peters Hope area, and at Keartons, from the Leeward end.
