Recognizing the positive things in our lives

“True gratitude recognizes how the positive things in our lives – like a success at work – are often due to forces outside of ourselves, particularly the efforts of other people.” – Robert Emmons
We do things not to hear “thank you”, but it feels good when someone acknowledges what we have done and shows gratitude. Even Jesus referred to the nine of ten lepers he healed that did not return to say thanks.

As children we were taught never to settle, so we are driven by a desire to outdo our present success to break past records, to exceed last year’s profit. Consequently, we focus on what we haven’t yet achieve and ways in which we can achieve it. We invest resources in developing new strategies, improving processes, and addressing shortcomings, meanwhile becoming impersonal and nonchalant about the forces outside of ourselves – the people who have made it possible for us to realize our current successes.

Robert Emmons, the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude said gratitude is an affirmation of goodness. We affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we have received. Secondly, gratitude is figuring out where that goodness comes from. We recognize the sources of this goodness as being outside of ourselves. It didn’t stem from anything we necessarily did ourselves in which we might take pride. We can appreciate positive traits in ourselves, but true gratitude involves a humble dependence on others.

Today we pause to acknowledge you our valued customers and dedicated staff as a source of our goodness and on behalf of the board and management of Interactive Media Limited, we are pleased that you have made SEARCHLIGHT Newspaper your preferred media for trusted journalism and your place of work.
