“A bad attitude is like a flat tyre. If you don’t change it you’ll never go anywhere.”

Recently, I was assisted by an accounts receivable clerk at a local Hardware Store and I was impressed with the quality of service she gave. The clerk was welcoming and well-bred. She smiled, asked questions and shared information. She was engaging and as I left the establishment, I felt satisfied. It was freshening to have met an employee whose attitude embodied excellent customer service.

Attitude is defined in Business Dictionary as “A predisposition or a tendency to response positively or negatively towards a certain idea, object, person, or situation. Attitude influences an individual’s choice or action, and response to challenges, incentives, and rewards.”

I was a silent participant in a discussion around the quote “A bad attitude is like a flat tyre. If you don’t change it you’ll never go anywhere.” Some shared the view that most of the social issues in society stem from poor attitude. Others were of the view that people with a positive attitude experience better fortune. However, one contributor, James Robison had this to say, “regardless of what attitude you have, it still comes down to action….”

Here’s an example, recently I was contacted by an acquaintance seeking my assistance to realize a dream. However, after a few days of waiting for me to confirm a meeting, I received a rude text message. When I enquired what motivated the text, I was told that asking me nicely wasn’t getting my attention. His choice of action ruined any chance of collaboration.

On the other hand, a few months ago I asked an acquaintance for assistance in refining a skill. I received an opened commitment. However, every few weeks I sent a message with a gentle reminder until the opened commitment turned in a scheduled appointment. “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” – Zig Ziglar

We all have challenges, but those who overcome them act with the right attitude. Some look at their flat tyre and rant and rave about how no one would help them. Others take out their tool bag and change the tyre or head out walking.

So, if you feel like you are getting nowhere, maybe mentally you have a puncture that needs fixing.
