Great leaders make tough decision quickly

In The Common Denominator of Success, Albert E.N. Gray defines failure by explaining, The common denominator of success, “the secret of success of every man who has ever been successful lies in the fact that he formed the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.” Albert Gray points out how everyone is passionate about some tasks and hates others. He stressed that the difference between success and failure lies in your sole decision to accomplish a task doing both things you like and dislike.

As a leader, the task you dislike may be that of making tough decisions. Peter Barron Stark said “Sound decisions are a hallmark of great leadership. A reporter once asked Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart, “How did you become so successful? Walton replied, “I have made a lot of good decisions. The reporter then asked an important follow up question, “How did you learn to make good decisions?” “By making a lot of bad decisions,” was Walton’s reply.”

A common bad decision many leaders make that often have dire consequence is recruiting the wrong fit for their company or holding on to “bad” employees for too long. A “bad” employee is not necessarily a slacker or a chronic late comer or someone who manufactures reasons to stay away from work. It could be an employee who does what is required, is punctual and is hardly ever absent but constantly complains and stirs up discontent. He/she splits hairs about benefits and spends time advising other staff about how they are being taken advantage of and should stand up for themselves.

A “bad” employee is like a bad apple. He/she has the potential to negatively influence the entire team and affect the company’s bottom-line. Great leaders make tough decision quickly. Form the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do. Make decisions that propel your business success.
