Things to consider with word of mouth marketing

I’m always taken aback at comments like “I’ve been in business for years and have never advertised.” Some businesses are satisfied with doing just okay. Sadly, businesses like those never achieve the success they could have.

Word of mouth is valuable, but it can’t be enough. Here are a few things to consider with word of mouth marketing: negative word of mouth is as damaging as positive word of mouth is effective. It’s twice more likely for people to share a negative experience than a positive one. It limits your audience and you can’t control how many people share or what they share.

I was inclined to use the service of a business because of word of mouth marketing of its rates. It turned out the price I was quoted was nothing near what I was told to expect. The satisfied customer might have received a special deal, but the information shared with me in good faith didn’t match my experience with the business.

Your marketing strategy should include an element of advertising copy, so prospects can understand your product and determine if it meets their needs. Print advertising remains a key marketing tool. When using print advertising, be consistent, advertise repeatedly to create awareness and build brand identity. Show more than you tell. Don’t rely only on word of mouth. “I mean, if you put all of your eggs in one basket boy, and that thing blows up you’ve got a real problem.” Jerry Bruckheimer.
