Four technicians arrive in SVG to help with COVID-19

Four specialist polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory technicians are due to arrive here from Cuba today, Friday July 17.

The Cuban technicians will work to strengthen the capacity of the persons attached to the newly established molecular laboratory unit that was designed with the capacity to detect SARS CoV 2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

The four specialists arrive just four days after 12 nurses who came from Cuba in late March to assist with the COVID-19 pandemic returned home on Monday, July 13.

The nurses had come along with four doctors, but the doctors remain to provide ongoing support for the discharge of general health services in this country.

Minister of Health Luke Browne said this week that the Cuban PCR technicians would help to “bolster local capacity as we ramp up testing to accommodate the resumption of international flights.”

All the medical personnel coming from Cuba have experience dealing with infectious diseases while one of them here already is an epidemiologist.

Cuban has also offered help to the other countries in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic including Italy.
