NEMO TO HOST TSUNAMI SMART TRAINING FOR COMMUNITIES AND PRIVATE SECTOR APRIL 25, 2017

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) in collaboration with the Seismic Research Center of the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) will be conducting a Tsunami Smart Workshop for Community Volunteers and the Private Sector on Tuesday 25th April, 2017, at NEMO’S Conference Room from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 a.m.

The main objectives of the workshop are:

• To give participants a better understanding of the tsunami science and how to use the tools developed under the Tsunami Smart Programme;

• To give participants a better understanding of the Kick ‘Em Jenny Sub- Marine Volcano;

• To heighten the awareness of the representatives of private sector enterprises that are within close proximity to the sea on tsunami, and the need to address possible contingency plans for tsunamis.

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) is currently involved in a Tsunami SMART Schools and Communities Project in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) with funding from the European Union through CDEMA’s Country Directed Funds.

Through this project, the National Emergency Management Organisation is working with six schools (Three on mainland St. Vincent and three in Union Island) to develop Tsunami Hazard Plans. Union Island is used as a pilot community to develop tsunami plans, and evacuation procedures for the two primary and secondary schools along with signage throughout the community and mapping of possible scenarios for tsunamis.

The project is also piloted in the Rose Place Community through a partnership with the Iniversial Rastafari Community Organisation.
