First Vaccination
Young animals are generally seen for a series of visits corresponding to their vaccination schedule. This is a very important time when we learn how a pet is adapting to the family, and to find out if there are any problems that can be detected and addressed before they get out of hand,{{more}} an example being the routine check up of the ears to determine whether or not the pup has ear mites, which, if not treated could lead to severe ear infections or deafness.
Topics such as house training, nutrition, vaccination protocols, parasite control, requirements based on lifestyle and travel and interaction with other pets and family members are some of the common topics discussed during these visits.
What is done
The weight is recorded. Significant variation of weight can signal health or dietary problems.
Evaluation of the hair coat and looking for parasites such as fleas, ticks, lice. We look for lumps, crusts, discolouration etc.
The general body condition is evaluated including the bone structure and joint integrity. The nails, feet, ears, teeth, nose etc are also evaluated.
The chest may also be auscultated with a stethoscope to hear lungs / heart sounds.
Abdominal palpation to check for organ pathology or abdominal masses.
The temperature is taken to determine if the animal has a fever or not.
Control of internal and external parasites such as fleas, ticks, roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, heartworms will also be discussed.
Why re- vaccination is necessary for your pet.
In the absence of vaccination or if the interval between vaccinations is too long, your pet is not protected against the fatal diseases that they are normally vaccinated against.
It costs so little, does not hurt your pet and gives the vet the opportunity to examine your petâs general health.
Contrary to some beliefs, vaccination and re-vaccinations make sense.
For continuous immunity, a booster injection is needed annually.
