Let safety be your watchword for Carnival 2013

In the midst of all the fun and revelry, SEARCHLIGHT encourages everyone to play it safe as we approach the climax of the 2013 festivities.{{more}}

SECURITY TIPS

HOMEOWNERS

1. Check all doors and windows when leaving home.

2. Inform your neighbours when leaving the house.

3. Secure all electronic equipment such as televisions, laptops etc.

4. Take down all serial numbers and place an identification mark on all equipment, in case the house is broken into.

5. Leave on a light in the house; it may deter the potential burglar/s.

6. Keep all valuables in a safe place, out of sight of the culprit/s.

7. Persons with large sums of money should deposit them in the bank.

8. Take note of how you leave the house when leaving for a long period of time.

9. Be very observant of persons in and around your neighbourhood who seem suspicious, especially new faces.

INDIVIDUALS

1. Be on guard for pickpockets.

2. Avoid wearing jewellery during activities in town or where large crowds would be.

3. Be careful when accepting money from persons. Counterfeit notes are being turned over.

4. Avoid consuming large quantities of alcohol during the season.

5. Avoid walking with weapons of any sort such as knives, scissors, cutlasses, etc. Once caught by the police you can be charged and taken to court.

6. Avoid walking alone. Walk with one or more persons.

7. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

8. Do not walk in dark areas alone.

MOTOR VEHICLES

1. Secure your vehicles at all times.

2. Do not leave any valuables on the vehicle seats.

3. Park vehicles in well lit areas.

4. Don’t drink or text while driving. Wear seat belts while the vehicle is moving.

5. Do not drive if you are not licensed. Do not drive unlicensed or uninsured vehicles.

6. Do not take or drive any vehicle without the consent of the owner. A person doing so could be charged for taking conveyance.
