What’s happening to SVG athletics

Tue, Sept 6. 2011

Editor: As I stay glued to my television watching the track and field athletes at the World Championships being staged in Daegu, South Korea, my mind began to focus on our situation here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as it relates to our athletes.{{more}}

I see young Kirani James of Grenada, Kim Collins of St. Kitts and a few more small islanders who are all home grown; not a local Vincy to behold.

For the last ten years, Team Athletics SVG has been embarking on development programs that are second to none in St. Vincent and the Grenadines or the OECS. If I am to quote its president, a race in every place and the most qualified coach in the region, even more qualified that Usain Bolt’s Coach. Yet, we cannot see or hear of any athletes of substance or quality emerging. We have seen, in a repeated fashion, athletes who are under this program performing poorly at the annual Windward Island School Games. We have also seen some of these same athletes at the Commonwealth Games and the Central American Games and other meets, only to place mash up last.

Mr. President, seeing that you are so critical of other sporting disciplines and Government’s Sporting Programs and policies, where are the athletes to show for your noble-minded ideas and programs? Who is the biggest beneficiary of track and field since you have embarked on this new trust?

The Bible says take the speck out of your eyes first, before you can help your brother.
