Hats off to the PM

Editor: The Prime Minister must be commended for creating a Ministry of National Reconciliation. This action further demonstrates Dr. Gonsalves’ commitment to addressing the political divisiveness which plagues our country. The Prime Minister again signalled his determination to bring Vincentians together, as we seek to heal the very soul of our nation and rid SVG of the political tribalism, which keeps “reds and “yellows” fighting, rather than using their collective energy to build a united SVG.{{more}}

We expect the next step in this reconciliation process will be a full Ministerial Statement from Hon. Maxwell Charles when the next Session of Parliament opens. The statement should outline the rationale for the creation of this much needed Ministry and how it will function, including expectations for Parliamentarians and citizens (alike). The Opposition Leader (preferably) or his Shadow Minister, should be expected to reply suitably in the House.

The Prime Minister should then formally invite the Opposition Leader to talks on national reconciliation. A National Conference for Church and community organisation should follow.

Let us not delude ourselves. Healing, reconciliation, the end of tribalism and divisiveness, unity and all the good things we hope for, will not come overnight. We are entering a very challenging period in our history. But we must never despair. We must never surrender.

Let us pray to Almighty God for the wisdom, patience, love, honesty and respect required to help us make this difficult journey successfully.

May God continue to bless St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
