Editor: Following the 2001 and 2005 general elections in which ULP won 12 seats, the General Secretary of the ULP, Julian Francis, was made a full minister. That appointment amongst other things caused the party to plunge into a state of unpopularity; hence the results of the 2009 referendum.{{more}}

Following the disaster of the referendum, the people began to own their government by advising the prime minister to remove Julian Francis from the Cabinet. That simple act helped to catapult the party into a recovery mode, hence the results of December 13, 2010.

On the night of December 14, the party leader asked us to own the government and we have begun that task. Mr. Prime Minister, I am pleading with you not to make the mistake of naming Julian a senator or a minister! That will be a backward move that will defy your campaign slogan of not turning back. We have come this far and we cannot afford to go down that road again!
