Importance of reading to your development

Editor: Most persons find it more relaxing to look at television than reading a piece of literature. However, both can play a significant role in our personal development. Looking at television requires little or no effort compared to reading.{{more}} Therefore, reading is more helpful in developing the brain. Some programmes on television that preoccupy many persons are simply a waste of time. Programmes like The Bold and the Beautiful, Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives are top of the list. Of course, that is only my view.

Our local newspapers come out on a weekly basis and it is a pity that they are not printed more often. However, in light of our small population, coupled with the fact that our society is not blessed with a high percentage of avid readers, printing two or three times a week may not make much sense.

A newspaper carries a wide range of opinion and perceptions. It is useful to expose ourselves to the understanding and reasoning of others. It does not matter whether it is in the area of politics, religion or any social issue. Some persons refuse to entertain the perspective of others, especially when it comes to religion and politics, and this is not good. We must always challenge our beliefs to see if they can withstand the opinion of others. If you are very confident in what you believe, then there is no problem in exposing yourself to the views of others.

I encourage you to ensure that you obtain your newspaper on a weekly basis. You do not have to read it all at once, but can do so over the period of a week. Constant reading will enhance the development of your brain and mind.
