Sabbath is very important

In her zeal to publicize a religious doctrine accepted by some people, a correspondent in your last issue of the searchlight 11/11/05 wrote: “To keep the seventh day Sabbath is very important. Nothing can be compared to it.” Such however is not in accordance with knowledge of the Bible. An honest, diligent search of the scriptures with an open mind will reveal the following: {{more}}

1. Jesus Christ said the greatest commandment in the law is to love the Lord thy God with all your heart, soul and mind. And the second is to love your neighbour as yourself; not to keep the Sabbath. Mat. 22: 36-40.

2. The Sabbath day command was made known at Mount Sinai, not at creation. Neh. 9:13, 14

3. The Sabbath was a sign between God and the children of Israel, and was to be observed by all within their gates, man and beast. It was never intended for all nations of the world. Ex. 31: 13,14; Deut. 5: 13,14

4. The seventh day Sabbath was part of the old covenant. Deut. 4: 13,14

5. That old covenant was done away with. Heb. 8: 13; Eph. 2: 14,15; Col. 2:13 – 17; Acts 15: 24

6. There is no New Testament command (i.e. after the death of Christ) to keep a 7th day Sabbath. Instead, disciples of the Lord meet and worship on the 1st day of the week. Jn. 20:19, 26; Acts 20: 7; 1 Cor. 16: 1,2; Heb. 10: 25, 26.

Must I say more? Let the Bible speak for itself. We must be diligent in searching for truth. No amount of clamouring by the SDA or their adversarial kinfolk can change these facts. If we obey Jesus Christ who is Lord (not Moses) we will enjoy an eternal rest in heaven and nothing can be compared to it. Amen.
