OBITUARY

Mildred York of Sri Lanka, born January 28, 1914, died in Surrey, England on December 27, 2005.

She resided in St. Vincent from December 1978 to April 1980 along with her husband James York who worked here on a United Nations contract with the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Mrs. York was intimately associated with the local Girl Guides Association. She revitalized the Association’s Trefoil Guild and as its Chairman succeeded in registering the Guild as a member of the ‘International Fellowship of former Scouts and Guides’ – IFOFSAG – an organization dear to her.

In 1971 she was Sri Lanka’s delegate to the General Assembly of IFOFSAG held in Australia.

As Chairman of the Trefoil Guild Mrs. York raised single-handedly some $10,000 EC from local firms and individuals towards the completion and furnishing of the present Girl Guides Headquarters in Kingstown.

Apart from her contribution to Guiding, Mrs. York also initiated projects for the physical and mental development of our Nation’s children.
