The New Democratic Party’s (NDP) attainment of the popular vote in the 2020 General Elections is an indication that the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines want change.

This was expressed by Dr Godwin Friday, president of the NDP, in a post made on social media on November 7.

“Thanks to all of you for rallying with us throughout this difficult election. By your vote, giving the NDP and me as leader a majority of the votes cast, you made it clear that you want change and that you prefer the NDP to be your government,” Friday said in his post.

He thanked the public for their confidence in him and said that he is “as determined as ever to bring about that change and deliver hope to our people”.

NDP’s president also encouraged persons to remain positive and committed to the purpose.

This is the only statement that the politician has made since the Unity Labour Party (ULP) gained a three-seat majority in the polls on November 5.

The ULP won nine seats while the NDP won six, and claimed an unprecedented fifth term in office.

But according to the preliminary tally, the main opposition party received 32,847 votes at the polls – 494 more than the ULP.

In addition to gaining the popular vote, margin changes in all but two constituencies were in the NDP’s favour.
In his November 7 post, Friday said he will say more to the nation in a subsequent address.
