Colonial place names around our country must go – PM
On the 39th anniversary of St Vincent and the Grenadines as an independent state, the Prime Minister has announced that colonial place names around our country must go.
At the annual celebration, which took place at Victoria Park on the morning of October 27, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves made a multitude of announcements during his address to the nation.
One such announcement was that, “the Government will shortly establish a National Committee on the Re-naming of Buildings, Roads, and Parks to reflect the post-colonial condition of our peoples.”
He noted that it was ‘high time’ that the names be revised, emphasizing, “even the names of minor colonials are on our streets and some villages.”
He ended by saying, “This is absolutely ridiculous in the 21st century.”
