General public urged to maintain healthy eating, active lifestyle

Every year, to promote good nutrition and healthy eating in the general public, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment hosts Nutrition Awareness Week.

This year, the week was observed from June 1 – 10 and highlighted good nutrition and healthy eating, using the national food based dietary guidelines. It was held under the theme, “Healthy Eating and Active Living: Play Your Part, Be Sugar Smart,” with a focus on reducing excess intake of sugar. The week coincided with Caribbean Nutrition Day, which is celebrated annually.

Community nutrition officer and coordinator in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment Hazellann Hadaway stated that the objectives for Nutrition Awareness Week 2017 included the awareness of good nutrition and physical activity in maintaining optimal health.

One of the major activities of the week was a half day event of fun-filled physical activity, including obstacle courses, held June 10th. CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank joined in the observance by sponsoring that event, providing trophies, medals, bibs and prizes for the winners of the various activities.

Business support officer of CIBC FirstCaribbean Jacintha Hinds noted that it was a privilege to collaborate with the Ministry on Nutrition Awareness Week to promote health and wellness nation-wide.
