The Kingstown Adult Red Cross group treated just over 50 senior citizens from both the North Leeward and North Windward constituencies to a scenic tour, as well as a visit to the Argyle International Airport. This event took place on Saturday, May 6, 2017. It was one in a series of activities organized by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society to mark Red Cross Week 2017.

Upon completion of the tour, the seniors were taken to the Red Cross Headquarters, where they were treated to a sumptuous lunch. After the meal, the seniors shared many stories with the Red Cross volunteers. Many vividly recounted the 1979 volcanic eruptions. Once the sharing began, it was difficult to contain their energy. One lady, having listened to the 1979 stories, got up and shared what she learnt from her grandmother about the 1902 eruption. Once she had concluded her tale, she questioned the much younger Red Crosser about the relevance of May 7. No one was able to reply; she then informed the gathering that “May 7 marked 115 years since the 1902 eruptions”.

The seniors expressed much gratitude for the opportunity to leave their communities and intimated that it would be a good idea to make this outing an annual activity.

Leader of the Kingstown Adult Red Cross group Ruby George responded by noting that she will do everything possible to grant their wish. She told the gathering that of all the volunteer tasks that she has been undertaking thus far, working with seniors has been her most rewarding experience.

She expressed the desire to have the cost of the event covered by the business community. This, she believes, would allow the Red Cross to allow more persons to benefit from the experience. Dora James mobilized the seniors from the North Leeward community, while Denise Francois did likewise for the North Windward communities.
