Vincentian author, poet, actress launches books

Vincentian author, poet, actress and wellness expert Sylvia Gould has two more books to add to her growing list of publications.

Gould, also a former nurse and nursing instructor, launched her latest works: ‘A Rude Awakening’ and ‘As I See It,’ two weeks ago at the Peace Memorial Hall in Kingstown, surrounded by family and well-wishers, with a book review given by Deborah Dalrymple, {{more}}director of the University of the West Indies Open Campus, and a long-time friend of the author.

‘A Rude Awakening’ is a three-part journey that tells of Gould reliving her dream of becoming a nurse and nursing instructor, part of her profession that she described as the best 13 years of her life.

The dream turns into a nightmare and emotional struggle in the second part of the book, as she is relieved of her position. The various sub-headings help the reader to identify with Gould, as she struggles to come to grips with what appears to be the end of her dream.

Section Three of the book tells of her awakening to faith, and rekindling her relationship with God, which propelled her past her disappointments, and ends with an epilogue, where Gould realizes a new dream.

The 85-page book was described by Dalrymple as a good and powerful read.

In ‘As I See It,’ Gould puts together a number of funny and insightful poems and monologues reflecting life from her point of view.

The books are available at local bookstores Gaymes and Nightingale, and are also available on, or the author may be contacted for copies.

‘As I See It’ and ‘A Rude Awakening’ join Gould’s first venture into publication ‘Organizational Misbehaviour’, which looks at the misuse of the Internet.

She indicated that as she is guided, she will produce more reading content for the public.

Gould is currently the founder and managing director of Altcos Wellness Enterprises, and has a Masters of Arts degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Great Britain; a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Education from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica; certificates as a registered nurse and midwife from the St Vincent and the Grenadines School of Nursing and a certificate in Natural Health from Logos Research, Counselling and Educational Institute, Trinidad and Tobago.

Gould is an accomplished actor, having performed locally, regionally and internationally. She had the honour of performing Off Broadway in 2013.
