Smash and grab at Coreas City Store lands man behind bars

A boldfaced act which saw the one of the show windows at Coreas Hazell Inc City Store being smashed and a television stolen, has landed Terrance “Jakey” Joseph in prison for the next three years.

The Paul’s Avenue resident appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate Court{{more}} on Wednesday on two charges of burglary and damage to property.

He pleaded guilty to breaking the show window of Coreas Hazells Inc City Store on Halifax Street and stealing a flat screen television belonging to the International Airport Development Corporation (IADC) between July 13 and 14.

Magistrate Carla James sentenced Joseph to three years on the burglary charge and six months for the damage to property. The sentences will run concurrently.

After the establishment was secured on July 13, Joseph, in the wee hours of July 14, used two stones to break the show window, after which he stole the television. When the surveillance camera was reviewed, Joseph was identified as the perpetrator. The matter was reported and he was subsequently arrested.

However, the television was not recovered, as Joseph declined to say where it was.

In an interview with SEARCHLIGHT, manager of the City Store, Jean Johnney-Findlay said they were still awaiting the repair of the glass.

Asked if that was the first time something like that had happened at the store, Johnney-Findlay said no.

“We’ve had other incidents, but somebody passed and took a picture and they blow it up on Facebook. It isn’t really any big news,” she chuckled.(KW)
